On a routine exploration dive with my cousin off the coast of Alligator Head, Port Antonio, we descended to 30m and were greeted by a shimmering school of Atlantic Spadefish (Chaetodipterus faber). Their graceful movements, with flashes of silver and black, were mesmerizing, creating a living art work at depth.
Fun Fact About Atlantic Spadefish: These social fish are often found in schools near reefs and shipwrecks. While they are omnivorous, their diet consists mainly of small invertebrates and plankton. They are known for their curious nature and sometimes approach divers, making them a favorite for underwater photographers.
Dives like this remind us of the vibrant and dynamic marine life that thrives beneath Jamaica's waters, waiting to be discovered and protected.
Ocean Conservation Tip: Practice responsible diving. Avoid touching or disturbing marine life, as even small interactions can disrupt delicate ecosystems. Always maintain good buoyancy control to protect coral reefs and marine habitats.
